The Gallows - Opening scene analysis

This is one of the many movies that influenced the making of "Inhabitant". This influenced the making of our movie as the opening scene begins with camcorder footage, this ties in with ours. This emphasises the realism of something like this happening. They also used distortion and glitches which give the same effect of our film. The time and date is also shown in the corner of the screen, making the audience aware of it being home footage. We also used this effect, the font was VCR which added to the effect.

Inhabitant Bloopers

Editing Part 2

Due to our film being based on a home camcorder footage look, we downloaded effects that created a slight glitch and interference with the camera. This was used towards the part where the "inhabitant|" appears, this connotes the power of a supernatural being interfering with the frequencies of the camcorder. This effect was an "Bad TV Transition" which was then dubbed over with a non copyright glitch effect that emphasised the bad signals, this created tension towards the jump scare, as it emphasised the realism of the situation. We also developed a low battery image was flashed repeatedly across the screen, showing danger and connoting something to happen.

Editing

For our film, we used the software "adobe Premiere Pro cc" this enabled us to get the best editing out of our film. Prior to the making of "Inhabitant" we had little experience in editing. Therefore, we invested in some online editing tutorials. There are several channels dedicated to teaching their knowledge of online editing, specifically in the software we were using.

To achieve the home video footage, we cropped the sequence to a smaller format and added layers of effects to give it the old camcorder look. Some of the features we used were "Arithmetic" and "Noise", noise gave a slight tint of grain to the picture, whereas Arithmetic focused on enhancing the blue, red and green lines, which created an old TV Look.

The Woman in Black Opening Scene

In the opening scene of woman in black, we are first introduced to a close up shot of children playing with tea cups alongside some nondiegetic sound which portrays an eerie and slow feel, giving this scene a sinister mood. The camera then continues to cut to a long shot of the three little girls sitting around playing in this shot we are able to see what costume they are wearing which is old fashioned long dresses and by the looks of their toys being china dolls and old fashioned prams this tells the audience that this story is set in a different era long time ago. The use of the white dresses the girls are wearing connotes innocence and portrays them as the victims in this story. The next significant shot is a close up shot of the girls' facial expressions they are smiling at each other and the duration of this shot is dragged out making their actions seem slow, this causes tension and makes the audience anxious. The camera then cuts to a long shot still following the 180 rule and the camera films them form one side of the room, and at this moment the girls heads turn towards the direction of the camera as if they are looking right at the audience , they facial expressions change to serious and they stare intently at something the audience cant see, this makes the audience curious and connotes mystery. The Three girls then turn their heads in synchrony to look at the window which is made up of three squares. The camera then zooms in to the shot of the window as the music becomes louder highlighting the window as something dangerous. The children  then stand up together looking towards the window, as they stand up the camera then cuts to an extreme close up a girl who drops her tea cup on the floor. This then cuts to the smashing of the cup. This is an effective shot as it shows the audience that the girls are oblivious to their surroundings as they continue to stare into thin air in the direction of the window, this infers that something out of the ordinary will happen. The camera continues filming their feet. As they walk towards the window we see the tea cups smash beneath their feet as they walk over them, this suggests that they are in some sort of trance powered by a supernatural being or spirit and are unaware of what they are doing. The camera then switches to a medium shot on the other side of the window so we see the three girls walking up to window, their facial expressions are shown blank due to being in a trance. The camera cuts back to a long shot filming them from the back as the girls step towards the balcony and open the window. This builds up tension for the audience as it gives a feeling of them about to jump out. The girls then jump out of the window together, the music suddenly hits a high note which emphasises this scene. This is then quickly followed by  nondiegetic sound of a scream in a women's voice along with the dialogue  "my babies". The camera then cuts to an extreme close up of one of the china dolls face, this contrasts the horrific scene having an object like a childrens doll which initially is intended for children and to connote innocence and fun. This scene then ends with an over the shoulder shot of a figure in black veils standing in the corner of the room. The use of the black veil implies mystery and an eerie atmosphere as we can not identify who this is and the colour black suggests danger and fear  and evil, this being an object of fear to the audience, the scene then is faded out.

Horror Makeup Research

In this video the girl gives usher ideas on how to create easy scary costumes that can be done at home. This is very useful as it gives us an idea of what costume we could make for our abnormal Antagonist in our Film. We wanted to pursue a costume similar to the Girl in the Ring. She Is a young girl who was thrown in a Well and rotted away in The well she has out grown black hair that covers her face and she wears long white dress and her skin is made to look very pale and dirty because she never saw sunlight and starved in the well. This look is also quite easy to achieve, Since Luiza is going to be the one being the Antagonist in our Film, she has long dark hair which I can brush over my face and i can tease it to make it look untidy and tangled to get a badly groomed look, this conforms to the female antagonist look. We will also make use of white eye shadow and white baby powder to cover her face to make her skin seem pale making me look dead and Ghost like. We also intend on using a Night dress which is long and white to recreate a dress similar to The ring.

The Antagonist

Most horror movies have their antagonist/supernatural villains as females as it usually goes with the story line of the film. Why do most people choose females over males for the villain? you might ask as women are traditionally  seen as more vulnerable and inferior to men this is usually represented in action movies. However in horror movies women are the best pick for being portrayed as the villain as we usually associate girls to be kind and non aggressive so when they are portrayed as evil ,murdering antagonists in the film it subverts from their stereotype. Which has more of an effect on the audience as they are shocked as to how a "girl" could scare even the toughest of men which emphasises the danger in the movie. Significantly, female villains are often portrayed as having a purpose far beyond senseless violence. Often, they are out for revenge, products of past male violence themselves. Therefore, an examination might well present us with an interesting portrayal of the Return of the Repressed and female victimisation. Female villains are represented in this way like in for example in "women in black" "The ring" "The grudge" "Carrie" and many  more.

Location analysis

This is the area we have intended to film in, it is a modest 2 floor house with a attic which will be a key location for our film. We think this is a suitable location as the opening of our story is based in a household and in a creepy attic with in the household. This location is also convenient for us as it is local as it is also Eleanor's Grandma's which requires no cost which is good for us due to our low budget. This location is also effective in creating a scary atmosphere as  typical modern horror movies are based in households at night for example"Paranormal activity,The conjuring". This way the story seems more personal to our audience as it suggests supernatural events like these can occur anywhere even in your home.

Movie Title Research

These are the results of our questionnaire researching which movie title best appeals to our audience. As we can see the majority chose Inhabitant as the  most appealing title where as the other film title ideas got less than 50% of votes and one of our film title idea "Chained" didn't even get any! which means we definitely wont consider using that as our film title.
