Looking into a typical Horror Soundtrack...

The soundtrack used in this clip from "The Shining" focuses on portraying a typical horror theme, due to its suspenseful music. The music played consists of string instruments and woodwinds. The use of strings portray a screeching and eerie atmosphere which helps build up the suspense and terror. Cymbals are used when Andy turns the corner to a shock of two twins standing there, despite the hotel being empty. This builds up the tension rapidly. It begins with strings to let the audience know that this scene isn't a mellow calm scene, but one that shows the true horror of the movie. The brass and woodwinds are used when the flashes of the twins appear, this is because it helps develop a tense atmosphere, and utter shock due to their appearance. The instruments mimic Andy's breathing and restlessness. this is an additional portrayal of his emotions and thoughts.

Several horror soundtracks consist of these type of instruments, classical strings really help induce the portrayal of suspense and a build up of tension.
